Courses

The Language Centre of the University of Fribourg offers French, German, English and Italian group courses in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). 

For these and all other languages, it is possible for you to work on your own. For both students and university personnel, our Self-access Centre offers learning programs that are completely autonomous or that are for individual study in one of our group courses. The courses offered cover all skill levels (oral and written) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1 to C2). Reflecting the university's language policy, the approaches and methods developed at the Language Centre have been designed in response to students’ needs. 

The courses offered by the Language Centre are divided into three categories:

Category A:
Courses during the semester in French, German, English, and Italian for students in all faculties and university personnel (at no additional fee)

Category B:
Courses during the semester in French, German, English, and Italian that are integrated in specific programmes and that are reserved for students at the University of Fribourg who are enrolled in these programmes (at no additional fee)

Details about Category B:

  • Language courses for bachelor students of German as a Foreign Language and of French as a Foreign Language;
  • English-language courses for students studying English (Faculty of Arts) and for students studying for their master's degrees in English (Faculty of Science);
  • Language courses (English, French, German, and Italian) for future teachers of foreign and second languages, who are candidates for the secondary education diploma (BA_SI);
  • Language courses to help students to acquire language knowledge and know-how for their studies and future profession (Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and Faculty of Law);
  • French and German courses for students in the program "bilingue plus";

N.B. The courses in Categories A and B are not open to auditors, students of other universities (including BeNeFri), or persons outside our university.

 

Category C: 
Intensive courses to prepare for internationally recognized language certificates and diplomas (at an additional fee)
These courses are open to any student enrolled in a higher-education institution in Switzerland (universities and HES) and to future university students (pupils of secondary schools who are preparing for university admission).

The Language Centre also offers an intensive French course for mobility students in the ERASMUS programme (at an additional charge).

  

ECTS credits

Each department, faculty, and university of origin is responsible for recognizing the credits awarded by the Language Centre.

The number of credits awarded is established for each course; the student's diligence and active participation in the course (including written and oral assignments to be submitted) determine whether the credits will be awarded.
