Ecology and Evolution

General

I am looking for motivated students who would like to do a project in evolutionary genetics. The projects listed below are suggestions that can be adapted to accommodate your interests and strengths.

Methods employed range from field sampling, and carrying out experiments in the field or the laboratory, to molecular laboratory methods and sequence analyses on the computer. Some of the projects may involve field work at Tvärminne Zoological Station in Finland.

Phd students in my group are enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Population Genomics and / or the Doctoral Program in Ecology and Evolution.

If you are interested in one of the projects or if you have your own ideas for a project that you would like to carry out in my group, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Bachelor thesis 2012 (see details)

* Project 1: Evolution of a single locus sex determination system in Daphnia
* Project 2: Parasite release in asexual lineages of Daphnia pulex
* Project 3: Present and historical genetic diversity in Capercaillie

Master thesis (see poster)

* Variation in hybrid vigour in Daphnia (details) (available)
* Genetic population structure in sexual and asexual Daphnia (details) (available)
* The molecular evolution of butterfly mimicry (details) (Barbara Huber)
* Variation in inbreeding depression in Daphnia (details) (Evelin Hürlimann)
* Ecological differentiation between sexual and asexual Daphnia (details) (Mikko Lehto)
* Genetic diversity and inbreeding in the the Northern Bald Ibis (details) (Florian Krattinger)

These are examples of possible Masters projects in the group (past and future), but the development of own ideas is explicitely encouraged. Even if you decide to take one of the proposed projects, you will be involved in the planning of the details.  The aim of each Masters thesis is that it will result in at least one publication, if possible with the student as a first author.

If you decide to do a Master thesis in my group, you will be expected to enrol in a Master of Science in Biology at the University of Fribourg for which a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) is required.

PhD/Postdoc

Currently, there are no open PhD and postdoc positions in the group. If you would like to join the group anyway, contact me to discuss options.
