PhD - Postdoc
I have been a Ph.D student at the Vascular Biology Laboratory, Unit of Physiology, under Prof. Zhihong Yang. I have started my Ph.D studies from 1st August 2007. I will be finishing my Ph.D defense in November/December 2011. During my Ph.D research, I have worked extensively on Hyperglycaemia, and the final project is on aging and the role of mTOR pathway in endothelial dysfunction in aging. I am currently working under Prof. Franziska Theilig. For me, renal pathophysiology is important and interesting because I have been involved in cardiovascular research before and there is a strong inter-relationship between cardiovascular and renal physiology. My current goal is to study renal proximal tubular endocytosis and its mechanisms.

The main scientific interest of Beat Schwaller is the specifcic function of calcium-binding proteins. How are calcium signals, which are used by practically all cells for intracellular communication, modulated by the presence of these molecules and how does the cell cope with the situation, if these proteins are absent?
Windsurfing on Swiss lakes and once in a while in more exotic destinations and powder skiing in the Alps are the perfect activities for recreation. On the other hand, Beat Schwaller takes pleasure in a good meal, preferably in a nice setting found in most wine-growing regions.
Scolari Brigitte
Lab. technician
Depuis 1997 je travaille dans les différents laboratoires de l'institut, en particulier en microscopie électronique, en histologie et en immmunohistochimie. J'aime occuper mon temps libre à faire de la sculpture et de la marche
Scotti Alessandra
PD Dr. med.
I studied medicine in Rome, Italy. My interest in neurobiology rose during my doctoral thesis on event related brain potentials. I opted for basic research accepting a postdoctoral position in neuroanatomy and moved to Switzerland. I gained additional experience in cellular electrophysiology eventually coming back to system biology with research on structure changes in the olfactory system. I like to explain things, preferring seminar classes and tutoring in practical courses or in a laboratory setting to the anonymity of a lecture hall. In the free time, I enjoy being with my two children and our two cats, cooking, gardening and meeting friends. I like bicycling and hiking in the mountains. At least once a year I leave to tank the colour shades I miss most of my home country: cobalt and ultramarine blue.

I studied 5 semesters of Human Medicine at the University of Zurich. After realizing to have a stronger interest in conducting medical research than in exerting clinical medicine as a doctor, I switched to the new degree program of Biomedical Sciences. Within one year, I finished the Bachelor studies in Fribourg and graduated with the Master after three more semesters at Bern University. During my Master thesis at Theodor Kocher Institute in Bern under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Britta Engelhardt, I was interested in the immunosurveillance of the Central Nervous System and worked on an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis.
In July 2011, I began my Ph.D. in the group of Prof. Dr. Marco Celio. The aim of my research is to shed further light on the structure and function of the Parvalbumin-nucleus in the hypothalamus.
In my spare time, I enjoy photography, various kinds of sports, travelling around the world and studying Japanese.
Wattendorf Elise
Dr. rer. nat. Doktorassistent
After my studies in Natural Sciences at the University of Fribourg I joined the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Basel where I focused on functional neuroanatomy and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for some years. My scientific interests concern inter-individual differences in the setting of neuronal systems. Namely, during my PhD thesis I investigated the effect of different age of second language acquisition on language related neuronal activity in multilinguals. Back in Fribourg I use fMRI to search for variables interacting with functions of the lateral tuberal nucleus of the hypothalamus during processing of emotional stimuli.
