Application procedure

Faculty of Science

If you wish to study for a doctorate at the Faculty of Science, you should initially contact the Dean’s Office at the faculty for information on the procedure to be followed.

Other faculties

1. Contact a professor

Make contact with a professor who could be interested in your candidature and who is willing to supervise your thesis work.

2. Application

Fill in the application form :French (SS13 / AS13) or German (SS13 / AS13)

3. Payment of the application fee

Please pay the application fee of CHF 100.- to the Banque cantonale de Fribourg.

No application for admission will be handled without proof of payment of the application fee.

4. Expedition of the documents required for the handling of the application for admission

Please send then your application form and the documents required for the handling of the application for admission.

The documents required for admission (General certificate of Secondary Education – matriculation-, intermediate or final university qualification, list of the grades obtained) must be appended to the application in the form certified copies.

If the original documents are complied in a language other than French, German, Italian or English, then a translation in French or in German must be appended to the original documents.

5. Handling of the application for admission and decision

When we have received all of the documents required, your application will be handled by:

  • the Office for Admissions and Registration who will formally analyse your application and decide whether or not you may be admitted to a doctorate programme;
  • then by the faculty concerned which will decide whether the faculty requirements have been fulfilled.

When your application has been returned by the faculty we shall mail you a written decision. This procedure can last several weeks.

6. Application for a visa

If you are citizen of a country subject to hold a visa, you must make an application for a visa before entering Switzerland to the appropriate Swiss diplomatic or consular representation in your country of domicile.

7. Presentation of the original version of your qualifications

In all cases, you must present the original version of the qualifications required for admission, either by:

  • post;
  • personally presenting the documents during the opening hours of the Office for Admissions and Registration.

8. Final decision of admission

When you have fulfilled all of the conditions for admission and presented the original version of your qualifications you will receive a final written decision of admission.

9. Expedition of the invoice for the semester tuition fee

You will receive an invoice for the payment of the semester tuition fee.

10. Access to university facilities / beginning of studies

Along with your bill you will receive information concerning your e-Account which you must activate.

Once you have paid the semester tuition fee (but at the very earliest one week after payment) you can:

• receive a Campus Card;
• print your attestation of registration at MyData.
 

11. Authorisation of your stay

As soon as you have arrived in Switzerland, you are obliged to declare your arrival and to submit an application for authorization to stay in Switzerland to the "Service de la population et des migrants" (SpoMi).
