European Business 
Today’s business environment requires managers with an international perspective.
The entry into foreign markets, the organisation of cross-border production
processes and the creation of worldwide innovation is crucial for the success of
many companies today.
Therefore, executives must understand the complexity of international business,
must be able to manage within an increasingly global environment, identify global
business opportunities and compete against international competitors.
The Master of Arts in European Business is a management-oriented master with
a strong emphasis on International Management and in particular with a focus on
Business in Europe. The programme is designed to teach the necessary methods,
concepts and tools to manage international companies as well as to build
intercultural awareness and soft skills that are necessary to be a successful and
valuable member of an international management team.
The programme does not neglect the business opportunities in other regions
of the world (in particular Asia), but some emphasis is put on the particularities
of Western and Eastern Europe since these are the dominant target regions for
companies from all over Europe, including Switzerland.

Mathematics
Mathematics is creativity in its purest form
Today, mathematics has entered all branches of science as a tool and as a language.
Physics and chemistry, where mathematics has traditionally held a central
position, as well as biology, medicine, economics and all other quantitative
sciences make increasing use of advanced mathematical methods. Flying an airplane,
using a mobile phone, surfing the internet, precise medical diagnoses,
security systems and countless other aspects of everyday life would be unthinkable
without mathematics.

The master programme offers advanced courses in a broad spectrum of mathematical
areas. Students have the possibility to specialize in analysis, algebra and
geometry, topology or in statistics, numerical mathematics and biomathematics.
It is also possible to upgrade knowledge in computer science, physics or economics.
Seminars lead the students step by step into the world of mathematical
research. The master program culminates in a master thesis carried out in a
subject of your choice under the supervision of a professor and a presentation
of the results.
The master courses of the nearby universities of Bern and Neuchâtel are open
to our students.

Physics
Long in the past, a physicist could be well informed and active in all known fields
of physics, but since the 20th century physics research has diversified to such
a degree that specialization is unavoidable. The well-known subfields are condensed
matter, particle and atomic physics, astrophysics and optics, however, a
wide variety of original niche studies exist.
Fribourg has a strong focus on condensed-matter physics, where students can
acquire a solid foundation for further studies. Specialists in the fields of superconductivity,
complex fluids, and collective phenomena of many-body systems
teach in those domains. Other modern topics, such as atom-laser interactions
and atomic inner-shell processes or econophysics, can also be studied in depth.
The proximity of the University of Bern allows easy access to lectures on other
topics, in particular on particle and astrophysics.
The Physics Department offers Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. curricula. During
Bachelor studies, the student will acquire the basic knowledge in physics and
mathematics and become acquainted with experimental techniques and computational
methods. During master studies, knowledge and techniques are refined,
progressing gradually toward a specialization. The master thesis is supervised by
an active researcher and initiates the student to the frontiers of research.
At the master level, about half of the courses are compulsory and of general interest,
the other half are more specialized elective courses. Specialized lectures
may also be taken at other universities, in particular Bern. It is recommended that
the student follows the specialized courses in the field of the future master thesis.
Other lectures, at the discretion of the student, are necessary to complete
the ECTS requirements. The lectures are complemented by seminars on modern
research topics and advanced laboratory work.

Chemistry
The Master of Science in Chemistry is built up of four different modules, each
of which is worth 15 ECTS to yield a total of 60 ECTS, and a master thesis
(30 ECTS).
The four required modules may be selected among the choice of modules offered
by the Department of Chemistry (see next page). Alternatively, up to
two Master modules (30 ECTS) can be chosen from other disciplines such as
physics, biochemistry or biology, provided that they are closely related to chemistry.
Currently, life-science oriented Master courses in chemistry are also available
at the University of Berne and can be used to complete the Master curriculum.
The offer of modules within the Faculty of Science in Fribourg is continuously
being improved, and individual Master modules may be elaborated on a personal
basis, allowing for flexible and individual Chemistry Master programs.
Choosing all Master modules from the local Department of Chemistry allows
obtaining 60 ECTS within one year. Followed by the Master thesis, during which
you are coached by a faculty member, the whole Master program will last three
semesters.

Earth Sciences
The Master of Science in Earth Sciences (BEFRI) is a joint programme run by the
Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Bern and the Department
of Geosciences at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. With only a 22 minutes
train trip separating the two Universities, students profit from the expanded
number of lecturers and researchers, and from the specialized geological knowhow
and facilities at both institutions. The merger of capabilities allows an exciting
and varied curriculum to be offered in a two-year, 120 ECTS credits degree,
taught in English.
Highlights of the Master include a choice from 5 specialties: Earth & Life Evolution
(ELE), Earth Material (EM), Environmental & Resource Geochemistry (ERG),
Geology (GEOL) and Pure & Applied Quaternary Sciences (PAQS).

Geography
All Master students follow the core module which introduces the environmental
issues from different perspectives. You’ll be exposed to the approaches and
methods used by natural and social scientists enabling you to choose between
the two domains for your further specialisation and your Master thesis. A vividly
supported possibility is to integrate both approaches in your personal work or to
specialize on methods of remote sensing, of geographical information systems
and of spatial analysis. According to your preferences, you can pursue your Master
programme either by taking the module physical or human geography or by
combining both.
Besides courses on physical data collection, analysis and modelling, the Physical
Geography module focuses on geomorphological aspects of mountain environment
(cryosphere, analysis of mass transfers and natural hazards). It offers the
opportunity to experience various techniques based on field survey techniques
like cartography and geophysics. You will work in research teams well known
internationally for their cutting edge research in mountain regions.
The Human Geography module will give you an overview on the economic and
social changes on different scales and a course is offered on classical research
methodologies in social sciences. You will learn how different conceptual approaches
are used in Human Geography in order to grasp and understand environmental
issues. Then you can choose among different courses according to
your personal interest thus completing your knowledge on the environment related
with e.g. ethics, risks or governance.
All these modules do combine theory, methodology and possible applications.
In addition, you have the possibility to choose supporting courses both in Geography
and from other disciplines. You conclude under supervision your Master
programme with your own and independent research presented in your thesis.
